q0idmation v0.1.0-beta.5

beta.5 brings q0editor and q0player to android, and adds shape tweens, an opt-in physics editor, autosave with crash recovery, keyframing while dragging, and smoother playback, exports and video.

android

  • q0editor and q0player run on arm64 android phones and tablets (android 8.0 or newer) as two separate apps.
  • the editor uses a canvas-first touch layout: one top bar, a slim tool column with latching shift/ctrl/alt, a foldable timeline, and library and properties drawers over the canvas. the collapsed timeline bar keeps blank keyframe, insert and remove frame, motion tween and onion skin within reach.
  • pinch to zoom, two fingers to pan, two-finger tap to undo, three-finger tap to redo. taps land where you touch, so select, subselect, text and bone placement work by finger.
  • the editor runs landscape, full screen and past the camera cutout. the system back button closes the open menu, drawer or text edit before leaving the app.
  • open .q1s and .fla files from anywhere through the system picker, or with "open with" and "share" from other apps; q0player opens .q0s and .q0v the same way. saving writes back to the original document where the source app allows it.
  • exports render inside the app, then ask where to save. mp4 uses the device's h.264 encoder. png sequences arrive as one zip that unpacks into a folder of frames, which android saves anywhere, downloads included.
  • q0player for android has touch-sized transport, recent files, full screen playback that keeps the display awake, and on-screen keys for interactive movies. fast preview in q0editor plays its snapshot in the q0player app.
  • android system fonts are available to the text tool, with roboto as the default.
  • recovery snapshots are written whenever the app leaves the screen.

shape tweens

  • Create shape tween (ctrl+alt+s) morphs a keyframe's drawing into the next keyframe's: outline, fill, stroke colour and stroke width, with easing.
  • shapes are matched geometrically without shape hints; they can split, merge and fade.
  • shape tweens play in the editor, in outline mode, in q0player and in every export. f6 inside a tween captures the in-between drawing as a keyframe.
  • fla/xfl frames using shape tweens import as shape tweens.

physics editor

an opt-in tool: turn it on under settings > extra tools > physics editor. while it is off, nothing of it shows.

  • objects fall, bounce and collide in a 2d physics world, and the result is baked into ordinary keyframes that play everywhere.
  • simple and pro modes, like rigging. simple offers gravity presets, materials, weight and bounciness; pro exposes gravity, air drag, time scale, steps per frame, wall bounce and friction, and every body setting.
  • bodies fall, stay solid, or follow their own animation and push others aside. colliders are boxes or circles fitted to the object.
  • collision groups: bodies collide only with bodies in the same group, and every group hits the stage walls.
  • momentum comes from how the object moved on the frames before the start, or is set by hand as a throw with speed and spin.
  • preview plays the result with the real artwork, with motion trails, before anything is keyed. it follows every change you make.
  • bake any range: from here, to the end, the whole timeline or the selected frames, for all bodies or only the selected one. pro can key every few frames and fill the gaps with motion tweens. baking again or removing the keys is one undo step.

autosave and crash recovery

  • unsaved documents are copied to a private recovery folder in the background. your project files are only written when you save.
  • if q0editor crashes, a final snapshot is written, and home offers the snapshots the next time it starts.
  • settings > autosave turns it on or off and sets the interval.

animation and editing

  • keyframe while dragging: f6, or the keyframe button on touch screens, keys the objects you are holding and the drag carries on in the new key. the record toggle keys every frame tick while you drag, as one undo step. raw drawings stay raw drawings.
  • workspace layouts and layout presets, fast preview, a screen colour picker, playback ranges, mask selection, effects on multiple objects at once, video preview and frame editing.
  • zoom in, zoom out and reset glide to the new zoom around the middle of the view instead of jumping and drifting sideways.
  • docked panels shrink down to one tool button wide, with thinner separators and no padding around the stage.
  • softer window and menu shadows; panels and headers ease open. labels no longer turn into text selections when dragged across, so panels scroll by touch.
  • dropping a layer on its own row moves it out of its folder again, the outer edge of a symbol's stroke is clickable again, and a folder that contains itself is reported as a folder cycle.

q0player

  • masked layers are cut on the gpu, with anti-aliasing, like in the editor. big projects no longer fall back to slow, jagged full-frame cpu rendering.
  • only the stage is shown; artwork parked beside it stays out of view.

video and export

  • q0v stores repeated frames once, uses the strongest png compression and drops the alpha channel of opaque frames. it stays lossless and seekable.
  • identical video buffers are shared as soon as copies appear, so several copies of one video no longer decode every frame separately until the project is reloaded.
  • video-only q0v export no longer fails its own verification.
  • the export window updates its progress a few times a second instead of on every screen refresh, leaving more of the machine to the export itself.

performance and fixes

  • selecting a fill made by bucket fills, cuts and merges could take seconds because of invisible leftover fragments. those fragments are no longer created, and fill geometry ignores existing ones.
  • holding the hand tool no longer redraws the editor continuously while nothing moves.

file compatibility

the current readers support q1s v40 and q0s v38. projects are saved in the oldest version that can hold what they use: only projects with shape tweens or physics need beta.5. update both applications; older builds reject files that use the new features.

choose x64 for intel/amd windows computers and arm64 for windows on arm. the editor and player have independent per-user installers. on android, open the apk and allow installs from your browser or file manager when asked; it installs over the test builds shared before this release. architecture-specific build information and sha256 checksums accompany the release.

changes since beta.4.2

build details

the windows installers were built from the tagged commit after formatting, workspace tests and strict clippy passed. the android apks are arm64 builds of the same commit and were installed and started on a test phone. png sequence export on android was changed after the last phone test and has unit tests, not a device run.
